Acetylcysteine acts as a hepatoprotective agent by restoring glutathione. It also acts as a glutathione substitute and enhances the nontoxic sulfate conjugation of acetaminophen. The mucolytic action is exerted through its free sulfhydryl group which opens up the disulfide bonds in the mucoproteins thus lowering mucous viscosity.
