Precise mechanism is unknown. Anticonvulsant activity is thought to occur because of inhibition of voltage-dependant N-type calcium channels. Keppra may also bind to synaptic proteins that modulate neurotransmitter release. Displacement of negative modulators may facilitate a GABA inhibitory response.
