Autism Spectrum Disorder – Quick Support Guide
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is common in British Columbia. Health‑care providers are likely to meet individuals with ASD regularly. Small adjustments to communication, environment, and approach can significantly improve care and cooperation.

What Autism Is
- A developmental disorder affecting communication, social interaction, sensory processing, and behavior
- Exists on a spectrum; presentation and abilities vary widely
- Each person is an individual despite a shared diagnosis
What Autism Is Not
- Not a disease or something to cure
• Not the same as intellectual disability
• Nonverbal does not mean non‑understanding
What You Can Do
- Use calm, simple language and one idea at a time
• Allow extra time for processing and responses
• Reduce sensory input when possible
• Explain actions before doing them (“First this, then that”)
• Keep communication devices with the person — it is their voice.
